Security Bailiff
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Provide a professional, courteous, and respectful security presence at the main entrance of the Court/Berea City Hall.
- Screen all persons and packages who enter Berea City Hall for weapons or dangerous objects using a magnetometer, hand-held metal detecting wand, and x-ray machine. Perform pat-down frisk searches, as necessary.
- Confiscate, secure, and document contraband and/or weapons brought into the building. Including, but not limited to, utilizing safe practices to confiscate and secure contraband and/or weapons; follow chain of custody and destruction protocol, as necessary; complete all required documentation; detain individuals found to convey or attempt to convey contraband and/or weapons into the Court.
- Assist the Judge’s Bailiff and Judicial Assistant in conducting all Court sessions, including ensuring the presence of all necessary participants (e.g., attorneys and defendants).
- Maintain communications with courtroom bailiffs and other security/law enforcement personnel regarding security matters and emergencies utilizing a hand-held radio and/or phone.
- Perform law enforcement duties within the boundaries of assigned duties. Including, but not limited to, detaining and arresting individuals; communicating and coordinating with other security/law enforcement personnel in the event of an emergency or critical incident; assisting with building emergencies, such as evacuation procedures, bomb threats, etc., as directed; providing first aid and CPR, as necessary.
- Direct the flow of individuals entering and exiting the building in a professional and efficient manner, paying particular attention to any signs of danger.
- Conduct searches of persons and property when necessary and warranted.
- Prepare written reports of disturbances, emergencies, and accidents.
- Oversee, coordinate, and supervise jurors before and during trials and sequestration.
- Comply with all Berea Municipal Court policies, practices, and procedures and conduct oneself appropriately while both on- and off-duty.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information and situations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with judges, magistrates, employees, attorneys, and the public. Maintains effective performance under pressure. Handles stress in a manner that is acceptable to others and the Court. Stays calm and even-tempered when handling crises, stressful or volatile situations, continuous change, or unexpected developments. Able to recover from difficult situations; ability to be flexible and adapt to change with little notice. Uses appropriate interpersonal styles and techniques to reduce tension and/or conflict between two or more people; can size up situations quickly; can identify common interests and facilitate resolution. Finds common ground and achieves cooperation without disruption to workflows or interpersonal relationships. General knowledge of civil and criminal law and procedure relevant to the jurisdiction of the Court. Ability to interact professionally with a diverse population of people from different geographic, socioeconomic, religious, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.
Education and/or Experience
Minimum Age 21 and High School Diploma/GED
Prior experience as a law enforcement officer strongly preferred.
Licensure, Certification, and/or Other Special Requirements
Must hold a current, valid Ohio driver’s license.
Must hold or obtain prior to employment Ohio Peace Officer certification, Ohio Bailiff Training Academy certification, or Ohio Judicial College Bailiff certification.
Must hold a successful OPOTA firearms qualification course of fire. Maintenance of required certifications and firearms re-qualification is mandated for the entire term of employment with the Court.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Has no direct supervisory responsibility for staff members.
Physical Standards and Working Conditions
- Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment and office technology such as personal computers, printers and copiers, and phone systems. Position requires working in close proximity to radiation producing equipment.
- Physical Demands: Physical demands of this position include walking or standing at least eight (8) hours per day; frequently required to push, pull, lift, and/or move up to forty (40) pounds; perceiving the nature of sound; near and far vision, depth perception; providing oral information; manual dexterity to operate business related equipment. Must be able to use a firearm, handcuffs, and control subjects that may resist; able to arrest and detain individuals, sometimes requiring physical contact and defensive tactics.
- Mental Demands: Use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information, and documents; interpret policies and procedures; use math and mathematical reasoning; work under deadlines with constant interruptions; and interact cooperatively with Court staff, law enforcement, other attorneys, and members of the public.
- Work Environment: Potential exposure to hazardous situations that may occur in the court environment. Must be able to tolerate exposure to evidence and testimony that may be disturbing; defendants and other individuals who may be verbally or physically uncooperative; allergens, such as perfumes and dust. May be subject to interruptions, quick deliverables, and changing work deadlines.

At-Will Employment
Employees of the Court are at-will employees and serve at the pleasure of the Judge; they are not in the classified civil service system and are not members of a bargaining unit. An employee may voluntarily leave employment with the Court at any time, and the Court may terminate the employment of an employee at any time, with or without cause.
