About the Role:
The Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) plays a vital role in supporting occupational therapists to help patients develop, recover, and improve the skills needed for daily living and working. This position involves working directly with patients under the supervision of an occupational therapist to implement treatment plans tailored to individual needs. The OTA assists in evaluating patient progress and modifying interventions to ensure optimal outcomes. This role requires compassionate communication and collaboration with patients, families, and healthcare teams to promote patient independence and quality of life. Ultimately, the OTA contributes significantly to the rehabilitation process by facilitating therapeutic activities that enhance physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
- Current and valid state licensure or certification as an Occupational Therapy Assistant in the United States.
- Basic knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and therapeutic techniques relevant to occupational therapy.
- Strong communication skills to effectively interact with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Ability to follow detailed treatment plans and document patient progress accurately.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in diverse clinical settings such as hospitals, rehabilitation centers, or outpatient clinics.
- Familiarity with assistive technology and adaptive equipment used in occupational therapy.
- Additional certifications related to specialized therapy techniques or patient populations.
- Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems for documentation and reporting.
- Demonstrated ability to work with pediatric, adult, or geriatric patient populations.
Responsibilities:
- Assist occupational therapists in delivering therapeutic interventions and activities designed to improve patients' functional abilities.
- Monitor and document patient progress, reporting observations and any changes in condition to the supervising occupational therapist.
- Prepare and maintain treatment areas and equipment to ensure a safe and effective therapeutic environment.
- Educate patients and their families on therapeutic techniques and strategies to support continued progress outside of therapy sessions.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care and contribute to comprehensive treatment planning.

The Occupational Therapy Assistant utilizes strong interpersonal and communication skills daily to build rapport with patients and collaborate effectively with the healthcare team. Clinical skills are applied to implement therapeutic activities that address patients' physical, cognitive, and emotional needs, ensuring adherence to treatment plans. Critical observation and documentation skills are essential for monitoring patient progress and communicating findings to occupational therapists. Problem-solving abilities help the OTA adapt interventions to meet individual patient challenges and goals. Additionally, proficiency with technology, including electronic health records and adaptive devices, enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of patient care.
