Job Summary
The GMS Application Engineer provides technical support for a portfolio of Market Management Systems (MMS) applications, including Security Constrained Economic Dispatch (SCED), Day-Ahead Market (DAM), Reliability Unit Commitment (RUC), Congestion Revenue Rights (CRR), QSE Training Simulator, and related systems. This role is actively involved in the design, development, testing, validation, implementation, and ongoing support of enhancements and modifications to MMS applications that support market operations and system reliability.
Job Description
- Support and maintain MMS applications across market operations, ensuring stability, performance, and compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.
- Participate in the design, development, testing, validation, and implementation of application enhancements and system changes.
- Provide 24/7 on-call support as part of the Market Applications Engineering rotation, troubleshooting and resolving application and system issues.
- Assist with proactive system improvements, enhancements, and issue remediation initiatives.
- Coordinate application setup, testing, and validation with market participants and stakeholders as appropriate.
- Perform MMS model load testing on a periodic basis and update model data in real time following established procedures.
- Design, test, and support MMS interfaces and web-based or client/server application changes.
- Support MMS applications during system failovers, server upgrades, database upgrades, and patching activities.
- Participate in disaster recovery drills and support business continuity procedures.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair MMS applications and interfaces, escalating issues as necessary.
- Participate in cross-functional teams to provide input, address feedback, and support application-related initiatives.
- Represent the Market Applications Engineering team in interdepartmental and stakeholder meetings.
- Serve as a technical subject matter expert for MMS applications and market systems.
- Act as a technical lead for MMS portfolio projects, driving initiatives from concept through production deployment.
- Work independently on complex assignments requiring in-depth analysis and evaluation of multiple variables.
- Mentor and provide on-the-job training to less experienced engineers and analysts.
- Collaborate with database administrators and infrastructure teams to resolve complex application issues involving servers, networks, storage, or databases.
- Test non-functional requirements and coordinate system-level testing with infrastructure teams.
- Assist in developing tools, processes, and procedures to enhance system reliability and operational efficiency.
- Maintain awareness of emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices.
Job Skills Required
- Minimum of 5 years of job-related experience beyond degree requirements.
- Experience with Market Management Systems (MMS), including vendor solutions such as Hitachi ABB or similar platforms.
- Experience with data historians such as OSIsoft PI.
- Proficiency or working knowledge of programming languages including FORTRAN, C, C++, Java, and Perl.
- Experience with PL/SQL and database-driven applications.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively in cross-functional teams.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Master’s degree in a related technical field is preferred.
