Job Overview

We are actively searching for an Environmental Engineer Intern to join the Environmental Department in Warren, OH. Seeking majors in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Sustainability and/or any degree that has an emphasis on various environmental focuses.

The intern will be doing a mix of learning general tasks that an environmental engineer (EE) and/or specialist would be completing in any company and work on applying those learned skills towards project development.

General work that the intern will be doing is reviewing site permits, site environmental plans, participating in go-and-sees, participating in site inspections, and participating in day to day activities, committees, and meetings which would then be applied to projects.

The intern will be working on projects, with guidance from the on-site EEs, that would touch each media. Projects that the intern will be working on are a general recycling program, stormwater best practice management and/or development, and conducting an internal environmental review audit. Below are some details of each project that the intern would be working on with the guidance of the on-site EEs.

  • General Recycling Program: The intern will work with the UC 2 Environmental intern, with the help of the Waste EEs from UC 1 and 2, on developing a standardized general recycling program that meets both states standards. The intern will work on identifying commonly generated recyclable items, developing signage, developing and rolling out the program, and working with potential vendors to start running trials. This program could help reduce the cost of general waste that is generated at the site and could even generate revenue for the recycled items while working toward the ZERO Waste initiative.
  • Stormwater Best Management / Improvement Project: The intern will work with the Water EE to review the various site water permits and various site environmental plans to understand stormwater compliance requirements, the identified risks to the site’s compliance status, as well as current controls and best practices that the site has in place. Once the intern understands these components, they will be tasked with developing a best management stormwater practice/project that would mitigate a stormwater risk and implement the best practice.
  • Waste Program Improvement Project: The intern will work with the Waste EE and the Resource Manager (RM) to understand the waste program. The intern will then work on a digestible and comprehensive list of waste streams that the site has that will encompass where the waste streams are generated, how they are treated, the hazards associated, and special treatment requirements tied to the waste stream. This can be used for training purposes, onboarding, and site waste visits/inspections. The intern will also be working with the Waste EE and RM to reduce waste streams and/or look at ways to recycle said items.
  • ISO 14001 Development: While the site is working towards the ISO 14001 EMS certification, the intern will help with the development of the program.
  • Internal Environmental Audit Program: The EEs will pull questions from the internal Environmental Compliance Management Self Evaluation, that is done yearly, as well as questions the team has encountered during inspections from regulatory agencies and parent companies to develop an internal audit form. After the intern has reviewed permits, site environmental plans, documentation, and been a part of internal inspections, go-and-sees and validation walks, they will conduct an audit towards the end of their internship. During the audit, the intern will evaluate, from their understanding, if the site is compliant, could develop best practices for items that currently have little controls, or identify gaps that the site has.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled as a Sophomore, Junior or Senior Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Sustainability and/or any degree that has an emphasis on various environmental focuses. degree program, or a recent graduate.
  • Exceptional communication skills, capable of effectively articulating ideas and collaborating with team members.
