Operations Manager - Design-Build
Position Overview:
The Design-Build Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the design-build department, with a focus on project execution, client satisfaction, profitability, and team performance. This role manages and mentors Project Managers, ensuring that projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to company quality standards.
The Operations Manager acts as the bridge between sales, design, field production, and clients, driving operational excellence and fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Management
· Directly supervise, mentor, and support Project Managers in the successful execution of landscape construction projects.
· Establish clear expectations, KPIs, and accountability systems for project managers and support staff.
· Foster a culture of teamwork, continuous learning, and proactive problem-solving.
· Conduct regular project review meetings with PMs to evaluate progress, financials, risks, and client communications.
Operational Oversight
· Oversee the planning, scheduling, and execution of design-build projects from award through closeout.
· Ensure that all projects meet company standards for safety, quality, and customer satisfaction.
· Manage project pipelines and workload distribution across the project management team.
· Standardize operational procedures, documentation, and best practices for consistency and efficiency.
· Partner with estimating and procurement to align bids with operational realities and profitability goals.
Financial Performance
· Monitor and manage project budgets, cost controls, and profitability metrics.
· Review job cost reports and ensure accurate forecasting.
· Collaborate with accounting/finance to improve billing efficiency, change order management, and cash flow.
· Drive accountability for achieving gross margin targets and company financial goals.
Client & Stakeholder Relations
· Serve as an escalation point for client issues, ensuring professional and timely resolution.
· Support Project Managers in building strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and vendors.
· Collaborate with sales and design teams during project handoffs to ensure seamless transitions into production.
· Represent the company professionally at client meetings, industry events, and networking functions.
Safety & Compliance
· Champion a culture of safety across all design-build operations.
· Ensure compliance with company policies, contracts, and regulatory requirements.
· Review safety reports and collaborate with field supervisors to address risks and incidents.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
· Project Delivery: Percentage of projects completed on time and within budget.
· Gross Margin Achievement: Alignment of actual vs. estimated profitability.
· Client Satisfaction: Repeat business, referrals, and client feedback scores.
· Team Performance: Project manager retention, development, and accountability.
· Operational Efficiency: Standardization and adoption of processes, reduced rework, and improved communication.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
· 7+ years of experience in landscape construction/project management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
· Proven track record of managing multiple large-scale landscape or construction projects.
· Strong knowledge of construction methods, landscape materials, scheduling, and subcontractor management.
· Excellent leadership, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
· Financial acumen with experience in job costing, budgeting, and forecasting.
· Proficiency in project management software, estimating tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
· Strong problem-solving abilities and a solutions-oriented mindset.
Working Conditions:
· Office-based with frequent visits to project sites.
· Requires occasional evening or weekend work depending on project demands.
· Physical demands include walking sites, reviewing construction work, and working outdoors in varying conditions.
