Miami University department of Energy Systems is seeking a student employee to provide hands-on experience in steam plant operations, crucial for a career in facilities management or power/steam eneration. Work assignments require advanced knowledge, skills, or abilities.Job Description
Key Responsibilities
- Monitoring & Operations: Observe equipment (boilers, pumps, controls), record readings, and assist with starting/stopping units.
- Maintenance & Repairs: Help with routine cleaning (scaling, dirt), basic
adjustments, and assisting skilled Stationary Engineers with repairs. - Water Treatment: Assist with water chemistry testing, adjusting chemical levels, and maintaining softeners.
- Record Keeping: Fill out logs, Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) reports, and EPA forms.
- Learning: Study, learn and develop safe operating procedures for plant
equipment. - General Support: Assist with moving materials, cleaning work areas, and
supporting mechanics and Stationary Engineers.
Typical Duties:
- Checking gauges, pressure, and temperature levels.
- Cleaning of plant and auxiliary equipment.
- Inspecting pipes, valves and equipment for leaks.
- Taking water samples and performing basic tests.
- Assisting with minor plumbing or mechanical tasks.
Work Environment:
- Exposure to heat, noise, dirt, and dampness.
- Working at heights or in confined spaces.
- Physical tasks involve walking, standing, and lifting.
Essential Skills/Traits:
- Eagerness to learn about industrial systems.
- Ability to follow instructions carefully.
- Good observational skills.
- Basic mechanical aptitude.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- A considerable knowledge of the work process as obtained through on-the-job training.
