Duties

Physician Scope of Practice: Assigned Duties but not limited to:



Assessment of Health Status

  • Obtain a relevant health and medical history Perform a physical examination based on age and history Conduct preventive screening procedures based on age and history Identify health risks and needs.
Diagnosis
  • Exams, assessment of breast masses, incontinence, fertility/contraception, osteoporosis, prenatal, and postpartum care.
  • Assess, stabilize, and determine disposition of patients with emergent conditions consistent with medical staff policy regarding emergency and consultative call services.
  • Assessment, work-up, diagnosis, and provision of nonsurgical treatment of patients to include pap smears, breast examinations, care of uncomplicated gynecological patients (non-operative), cervical disorders, common STD's/infections, family planning, gynecological cancer screening, history and physical examinations, menstruation disorders management, incontinence, patient counseling and education, perform pelvic examination with associated laboratory evaluation, pelvic floor dysfunction management, peri-menopause/post-menopause management,
    and preventive health care.
  • Formulate the appropriate differential diagnosis based on the history, physical examination and clinical findings Demonstrate high level of autonomy and skills in identification of disease and diagnosis
Development of a Treatment Plan
  • Establish priorities and develop a plan of a care which includes ordering appropriate laboratory and x-ray diagnostic tests.
  • Make clinical decisions to initiate prescription of medications to maintain acute and chronic illness and promote wellness
  • Initiate prescription for supplies, equipment to be used at home, supplies needed for wound care
  • Refill appropriate medication to continue regimen
  • Identify the need to change a medication regimen
  • Initiate prosthetics requests for assistive devices
  • Identify and instruction on non-pharmacological interventions
  • Initiate appropriate VA and community referrals
  • Provide patient/family education in collaboration with other PACT members
Implementation of the Plan
  • Implementation of the treatment plan in accordance with approved clinical privileges
  • Collaborate with nursing peers, physicians and other professionals who influence the health environment
  • Schedules for appointments for patients in collaboration with team members to ensure that all patients are scheduled within time constraints established by VHA polices especially adhering to priority access for service connected and OEG/OIF veteran populations
  • Reconciles medications with each patient visit
Women's Health Specific
Assess, diagnose, monitor, promote health and protect from disease, and manage illnesses and injuries of the female patient including health counseling, well woman

  • The scope of practice in this area may include the procedure listed below.
  • Contraceptive devices
  • Contraceptive implant insertion and removal
  • IUD insertion and removal.

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

Conditions of employment

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.



Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education. Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
    • Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
    • Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
    • For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must confirm that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.
  • Licensure and Registration. Physicians must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The Physician must maintain current registration in the state of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
  • Residency Training. Physicians must have successfully completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, in an accredited core specialty training program (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are:
    • Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) leading to eligibility for board certification, OR
    • Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) leading to eligibility for board certification, OR
    • One year of post medical school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post-training independent practice (performing under a full and unrestricted license) in the United States, OR
    • Non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the United States (performing under a full and unrestricted license) performing duties related to the position they are applying for (United States fellowships would be creditable towards this requirement), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the Physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
  • English Language Proficiency. Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7402(d) and 7407(d).


Preferred Experience: Minimum of one year of Primary Care experience with the full complement of Women's Health care.

Physical Requirements: Work is performed primarily in a patient care setting; adequately lighted, temperature controlled, and ventilated. Office temperatures fluctuate periodically; involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as clinics, offices, meeting and training rooms or libraries; exposure to noise and dust on occasion.

Education

[If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]

NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
