Corrections deputies
The Ottawa County Sheriff Office has immediate openings for Corrections Deputies. This is a bargaining unit position and all wages and benefits are administered through the appropriate collective bargaining agreement. Current starting wages are: non-certified $29.50 ($29.97 after 6-month probation); certified $30.38 ($30.53 after 6-month probation).
A Corrections Deputy, under general supervision: maintains the security and discipline of the inmates in the jail facilities; assigns inmates in appropriate category by reviewing medical, emotional and behavioral situations; makes housing assignments; records daily court proceedings, new charges or detainees. Candidates shall (1) possess knowledge of supervision of inmates in a controlled environment and related safety practices and agency, state and/or federal rules and regulations regarding jail operations, (2) have the ability to apply principles to solve practical, everyday problems, (4) add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, (5) maintain accurate records, (6) develop good rapport with inmates and other employees, (7) demonstrate fitness for duty, including physical fitness. Qualified candidates must be able to calculate fractions, decimals and percentages; read and write common vocabulary; and complete probationary period in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. Selected candidates must be able to pass a criminal background check, polygraph, psychological evaluation and post-offer drug screen. Selected candidates must successfully complete approved corrections officer training course within one (1) year of hire. Employees may be required to work evenings, night shifts, weekends and overtime; may be exposed to dangerous and hostile inmates.
