Job Summary

The Substation & Transmission Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and comprehensive cost estimates for both transmission line and substation construction projects. This role requires strong technical aptitude, a sales driven mindset, and the ability to collaborate across teams and utilities to deliver value-based solutions. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, manages multiple bids simultaneously, and builds strong customer and vendor relationships.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Analyze and interpret electrical plans, specifications, and construction drawings to develop complete and accurate project estimates.
• Develop detailed material takeoffs and cost estimates for transmission line projects.
• Develop detailed material takeoffs and estimates for substation projects including:

• • Power Transformers and transformer accessories
  • Circuit breakers and reclosers
  • Switches (disconnects, load break switches, gang operated)
  • Capacitor banks and reactors
  • Bus pipe, bus fittings and expansion components
  • Connectors, clamps, insulators, and hardware
  • Substation structures, foundations, and related civil components.

• Track revisions, RFIs, and scope changes impacting estimates
• Demonstrate working knowledge of transmission line hardware, including mechanical and electrical functions.
• Actively engage in vendor pricing negotiations to secure competitive costs while managing financial risk.
• Collaborate with sales, Project Services operation, and branch/warehouse personnel to support project execution and customer expectations.
• Build and maintain strong customer relationships to position Irby as a preferred supplier and trusted partner.
• Support sales efforts by identifying opportunities, proposing solutions, and aligning estimates with customer needs.
• Understand and apply financial modeling concepts related to project-oriented work, including margin risk, and return.
• Manage multiple bids concurrently while meeting tight deadlines and maintaining accuracy.
• Participate as a key contributor in a high performing, independent team environment.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to learn and understand electrical plans, specifications and construction drawings.
• Knowledge of transmission line materials, mechanical, and electrical functions.
• Knowledge of substation materials, mechanical, and electrical functions.
• Ability to manage multiple estimates under deadlines
• Ability to perform mathematical functions
• Unbound thinking or the ability to create insightful, exciting solutions for both customer and Company problems with major account sales
• Strong communication and collaboration skills across internal teams and external partners
• Must be PC literate with knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, & PowerPoint) required
• Proven negotiation skills with vendors and suppliers

Preferred Qualifications

• Preferred minimum 3 years industry or distributor sales experience is desired 5+ years business experience in the Utility Industry market desired)
• Familiarity with high-voltage and medium voltage substation systems
• Bachelor`s degree (B. S.) from four-year college or university; or three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. An Engineering or Technical degree is a plus but not required
