Senior Precision Metrology Inspector

A day in this role

You start your shift reviewing the latest incoming lots, matching parts to customer blueprints and applicable specs. With gauges calibrated and plans in hand, you move between receiving, in-process, and final inspection stations—verifying dimensions, checking finishes, and confirming documentation before sign-off. Along the way, you mentor inspectors and machinists on best-practice measurement techniques, answer questions on GD&T callouts, and partner with the Quality Manager when a reading looks questionable.

When a discrepancy appears, you document it thoroughly, initiate or complete DMRs, and collaborate with production to determine appropriate adjustments or rework. You approve first-piece and in-process checks, confirm finished-goods compliance, and verify any rework has resolved the nonconformance. Throughout the day, you maintain orderly, accurate records that meet ISO 9001 and AS9100 requirements—and you continuously suggest smarter, safer ways to inspect parts.

Core responsibilities

• Perform receiving, in-process, and final inspections to customer drawings, criteria, control plans, and sampling plans.
• Maintain precise inspection records, filing, and documentation in alignment with all quality regulations.
• Escalate questionable measurements, visual discrepancies, and nonconforming product to the Quality Manager.
• Create and complete DMRs as needed; support dispositions and follow-up.
• Approve first article and in-process production by confirming specifications via visual and dimensional checks; communicate adjustments to production supervision.
• Approve finished product by verifying specifications; conduct visual and measurement tests; route items for rework and confirm rework effectiveness.
• Promote a safe, compliant workplace by following standards, procedures, and legal regulations.
• Ensure inspection forms and records are complete, accurate, and traceable.
• Apply good manufacturing practice and maintain accurate paperwork/reporting in compliance with ISO 9001 and AS9100.
• Recommend improved inspection methods, tools, and approaches.

Required training & experience

• 10+ years as a quality inspector in a precision manufacturing environment.
• Hands-on experience with inspections driven by drawings, criteria, gauging, control plans, and sampling plans.
• Proven track record in a quality inspection or closely related role.
• Strong attention to detail and results orientation; responsible and trustworthy.
• Familiarity with quality testing equipment and systems.
• Knowledge of quality control standards and test methodologies.
• Working knowledge of manufacturing processes and procedures.
• Fluent in GD&T, including the related geometric symbols.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and apply them to inspection tasks.
• Solid shop math skills.
• Understanding of core ISO standards.
• Proficiency using general inspection equipment: Calipers, Micrometers, Thread Gauges, Surface Tester, Optical Measurement Equipment; CMM experience is a plus.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Self-motivated with a positive attitude.

Preferred skills

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word.
• 1–2 years of formal Quality Control inspection experience in a precision manufacturing setting.

Vision requirements

Annual eye examinations are required. Candidates must have visual acuity of 20/25 in one or both eyes and be capable of reading the Jaeger J1 chart (or equivalent) at 16 inches—corrected or uncorrected—for reading equipment dial gauges, blueprints, precision measuring instruments, and for visual inspection of parts.
