Job Title:Veterinary Care Assistant 2 (VA) - Small Animal Surgery

Department:Veterinary Medical Center | Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery

The College of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Medical Center seeks a Veterinary Assistant to join the Small Animal Surgery team. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to assist in the provision of care to ill and injured animals as well as providing assistance to clinicians, staff and professional students in the days to day operations of the Veterinary Medical Center. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: providing basic patient care functions; taking temperature, pulse, respirations, entering history and physical findings in medical record; using hospital information system for charges and charting in medical record; assisting in the collection of lab specimens such as blood, urine, and feces for testing; assisting with patient assessment, restraint and treatments; assisting in prepping patients for surgery, circulating in the operating suites, assisting with training student employees in prescribed care of animals; comforting and caring for hospitalized animal patients; walking patients and providing clean housing, food, and water at all times; monitoring patients and notifying higher level technician or veterinarian of any unusual changes or symptoms; assisting with the admission and discharge of patients; transporting patients within the Veterinary Medical Center and to Goss Lab; delivering specimens to necropsy; stocking supplies including feed, medical supplies and equipment; cleaning and disinfecting treatment and surgical areas, animals housing units, adjacent areas and supporting equipment following prescribed sanitation procedures and observing rules of epidemiology to prevent spread of disease; performing daily cleaning of outdoor dog exercise areas and VMC entrances; cleaning of all animal areas including windows, floors, light covers, ledges, hallways, vents, receiving rooms etc.; notifying supervisor of

need for non-routine repairs; assisting with laundry; providing clerical support when necessary; and other duties as assigned. The successful candidates will be expected to work 40 hours a week, primarily on first shift. The position will require working a rotating on call schedule including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. This position is subject to a background check prior to starting.

Hiring Range: $18.00 - $20.74 per hour

Physical Requirements:

Standing for long periods of time, pushing/pulling/lifting up to 75 pounds, exposure to animal dander and/or zoonotic diseases, and exposure to needle sticks, hazardous chemicals, and/or bio hazardous waste.
