Definition

Assists in planning, implementing, and managing the City of Akron’s sustainability and resilience projects and initiatives to contribute to the City’s vision for a healthy, thriving environment and community. Works under the general administrative and policy direction of the Director of Sustainability and Resiliency.

Characteristic Work

Supports the development of broad long-range plans such as a climate action plan and other sustainability planning efforts. Researches, develops, recommends, and implements new sustainability policies, programs, and initiatives or revises existing ones. Gathers and analyzes data related to climate impacts, greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, tree canopy, and other sustainability topics to inform decision-making. Assists with identifying and applying for grants to fund sustainability and resilience projects. Uses a computer to conduct research, manage projects, and create reports and correspondence. Conducts research and peer benchmarking to determine best practices and approaches to sustainability projects or programs. Serves as a subject matter expert and technical resource on issues related to solar energy, electrification, housing and building energy efficiency, and similar topics, and advances policies or initiatives related to those issues. Collaborates with other departments and public entities to align sustainability efforts, develop projects and programs, and achieve objectives. Proposes and executes public outreach and communication efforts to support sustainability initiatives and build understanding and engagement across the community. Meets with other City divisions, federal, state, and local agencies, consultants, contractors, developers, news media, and public to provide explanation and education about policies, planning processes, programs, and other initiatives or actions. Keeps abreast of changing environmental regulations, policies, and requirements that impact sustainability and resilience programs and initiatives. Represents the City at public events, meetings, and conferences. Drives to meetings, training, and site visits. Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree and a minimum of three years of professional paid experience in developing, implementing, and managing sustainability, energy management, renewable energy and/or electric vehicle integration programs, or related work. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver’s license.


Considerable knowledge of concepts central to climate resiliency and sustainability planning. Considerable knowledge of federal, state, and local programs and processes related to environmental projects, renewable energy, building performance, and energy efficiency standards. Knowledge of state, local and federal laws, rules and guidelines pertaining to environmental protection, grants and contracts.


Skill in the use of computers with standard and customized business software. Skill in developing and implementing complex public policies or programs. Ability to meet established deadlines. Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously. Ability to identify funding opportunities, assist in writing grant proposals, and manage projects. Exceptional ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships with others. Public speaking ability. Ability to read and decipher complex regulations, contracts, and agreements. Exceptional ability to communicate orally and in writing. Ability to analyze data, identify problems, and develop effective solutions. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. List of essential job functions available upon request.
