Material Handler/Laborer

Delaware, OH

Aerotek is hiring Material Handlers in Sussex County, DE! This is a day shift position offering weekly pay.

Job Description

The Material Handler supports daily operations within a fabrication and metal manufacturing environment by safely moving raw materials and finished products throughout the facility. This role focuses on efficient material flow, accurate handling, and maintaining a clean, organized work area. The position is ideal for someone who is mechanically inclined, experienced with sit-down forklift operation, and comfortable performing physically demanding work in a fast-paced shop setting.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a sit-down forklift to transport raw materials, components, and finished products throughout the facility.
  • Move, load, unload, and stage metal materials and fabricated parts to support production and shipping activities.
  • Operate an overhead crane to safely move structural steel and fabricated components, with training provided as needed.
  • Supply production personnel with the materials and components required to maintain continuous workflow.
  • Read and use a tape measure to verify dimensions and confirm material specifications prior to staging or movement.
  • Assist with inventory organization, material tracking, and inventory control activities.
  • Support shipping and receiving functions, including packing, order pulling, and material handling for outbound and inbound orders.
  • Use RF scanners or similar tools to scan, track, and record materials as they move through the facility.
  • Perform routine inspections of forklifts, overhead cranes, rigging, and other material handling equipment to identify basic maintenance needs or safety concerns.
  • Handle rigging tasks associated with lifting and moving structural steel and heavy fabricated parts in a safe manner.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area, including regular housekeeping in material storage and staging zones.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, manufacturing best practices, and shop guidelines when operating equipment and handling materials.
  • Work collaboratively with machine operators, welders, and other shop personnel to coordinate material flow and support production schedules.
  • Perform general labor duties related to material handling and shop support as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Previous experience operating a sit-down forklift in an industrial, manufacturing, or warehouse environment.
  • Ability to accurately read and interpret a tape measure for verifying dimensions and material specifications.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working around fabrication, metalworking, and manufacturing equipment.
  • Experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, metal shop, or industrial setting.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in a fast-paced shop environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Strong attention to detail when handling, staging, and tracking materials.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to established safety procedures and best practices.
  • Basic understanding of material handling practices, including safe loading, unloading, and staging of metal products.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with material handling in a structural steel or metal fabrication shop.
  • Experience in shipping and receiving, including packing and order pulling.
  • Familiarity with inventory control processes and material tracking systems.
  • Experience using RF scanners or similar technology for inventory and order processing.
  • Exposure to overhead crane operation and rigging for lifting heavy materials (training provided for the role).
  • Comfort performing general labor tasks in support of shop operations.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with machine operators, welders, and other skilled trades in a job shop environment.

Work Environment

The facility consists of three buildings on-site and a small office area at the front. The shop is not temperature controlled, so working conditions reflect seasonal weather variations typical of an industrial environment. You will work alongside machine operators, welders, material handlers, and laborers in a hands-on fabrication and metal manufacturing setting, using equipment such as sit-down forklifts, overhead cranes, and rigging tools.
