Digital Controls/Firmware Lead Engineer
Wright Technical Services is representing an industry-leading advanced manufacturing organization seeking a Digital Controls / Firmware Lead Engineer to lead architecture, development, and verification of embedded firmware for industrial control platforms supporting applications such as advanced manufacturing equipment, power electronics systems, and energy infrastructure technologies.
This role requires deep expertise in embedded systems and real-time control, along with the ability to influence system-level architecture decisions and provide technical leadership across hardware, firmware, and software teams. This individual will play a key role in next-generation product development, platform strategy, and engineering best practices.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership for embedded firmware architecture supporting real-time industrial control systems
- Define system behavior in partnership with hardware and software teams, establishing clear architectural boundaries
- Design and develop embedded firmware in C/C++ for microcontrollers and DSP-based platforms
- Implement deterministic control loops supporting power conversion, motion control, and real-time processing applications
- Develop firmware interfaces to ADCs, DACs, PWM generators, sensors, and industrial communication protocols (CAN, I2C, SPI, etc.)
- Lead prototype bring-up, system-level debugging, and root cause troubleshooting using lab instrumentation and debugging tools
- Develop and execute firmware validation and system integration test plans
- Mentor junior engineers and lead technical design reviews
- Drive engineering standards, documentation quality, and development methodology improvements
- Partner with hardware, power electronics, and manufacturing engineering teams to support product release and production readiness
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related technical field
- 8+ years of experience developing embedded firmware using C/C++ in real-time operating environments
- Proven experience leading complex technical projects or initiatives
- Strong experience with embedded development toolchains and lab instrumentation (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG, etc.)
- Strong system-level troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities
- Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
- Experience with power electronics, industrial equipment, welding processes, or motor control systems
- Understanding of control theory and signal processing
- Experience with model-based controls development tools
- FPGA exposure (VHDL preferred)
- Python for testing, automation, or data analysis
