The Avionics Fabrication Technician supports the design, integration and testing of advanced flight simulators and high-fidelity training devices. This role focuses on the “ground-up” fabrication of simulator cockpits, integrating authentic aircraft avionics with high-speed computing systems. You will translate engineering designs into functional hardware used by the Air Force for critical pilot performance research and mission rehearsal. This position will be on site at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Simulator Fabrication: Build and assemble simulator sub-systems, including instrument panels, center consoles, and flight control interfaces (throttles, sticks, and rudders).
  • Avionics Integration: Modify and integrate "Real-World" Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) and glass cockpit displays into a simulated environment.
  • Harness & Interface Development: Fabricate complex, one-off wire harnesses and interface cables that connect aircraft hardware to simulation computers (PC-based architectures and I/O boards).
  • Prototyping & Design Support: Collaborate directly with AFRL (Air Force Research Laboratory) engineers to iterate on "breadboard" designs and rapid prototypes for new research initiatives.
  • Testing & Calibration: Conduct system-level "Power On" testing, signal tracing, and calibration of flight controls to ensure the simulator matches actual aircraft performance data.
  • Technical Documentation: Maintain accurate "as-built" redlines for electrical schematics and wiring diagrams within a controlled DoD lab environment.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • 3+ of avionics or electronics fabrication, specifically supporting DoD programs or military flight systems.
  • Familiarity in MIL-SPEC soldering, crimping, and wire-routing standards (e.g., IPC-WHMA-A-620).
  • Ability to integrate COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) hardware with military-grade avionics.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools: Oscilloscopes, Multimeters, and Signal Analyzers.
  • Fabrication Skills: Familiarity with basic machine shop tools (drill presses, grinders, hand tools) to modify enclosures or mounting brackets as needed.
  • Military Standards: Knowledge of FOD, ESD, and DCMA 8210.1 (Contractor's Flight and Ground Operations) safety requirements.

Preferred Attributes

  • Prior experience at Wright-Patterson AFB or within an AFRL-supported environment.
  • Background in flight simulation (Link, CAE, or similar simulator platforms).

Other Position Requirements:

  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship is a requirement for this position.
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance prior to date of hire.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a secure fabrication shop and laboratory setting.
  • Requires the ability to maneuver in and out of confined simulator cockpits and under-floor cable trays.

SECURITY RESPONSIBILITIES

Must comply with all company security and data protection / usage policies and procedures. Personally responsible for proper marking and handling of all information and materials, in any form. Shall not divulge any information, or afford access, to other employees not having a need-to-know. Shall not divulge information outside company without management approval. All government and proprietary information will be accessed and stored electronically on company provided resources.

  • This position requires a DoD secret security clearance which requires US citizenship for work on DoD contracts.
