Job Summary
The Keyboard Shop Manager and Lead Technician is responsible for the tuning, servicing, and rebuilding of all CIM and CWRU Pianos. This position reports to the Assistant Vice President of Artistic Administration & Operations.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee tuning, repair, and rebuilding of CIM and CWRU pianos and CIM harpsichords.
- Train and supervise piano technicians.
- Arrange for piano moves within facilities, to and from student apartments, and to and from sites used for CIM offerings and events.
- Manage budget for supplies, parts, and moving.
- Ensure preparation of pianos for events (e.g., Encore, Cleveland Piano Competition, summer music camps).
- Communicates and works closely with maintenance, concerts and events staff, faculty, students, movers and vendors.
Education, Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or 3-5 years of related experience and/or training.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding and deal with multi-faceted problems.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general and technical documents, write reports and correspondence, and present information and respond to questions to and from various constituencies.
- Extreme proficiency in tuning, voicing, regulating, and repair.
- Ability to tune by ear.
- Skilled in achieving tuning sufficiently stable to withstand heavy playing.
- Understanding the impact of humidity on pianos.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
Exposure to solvents and aerosol sprays: lacquer thinner, acetone, lubricants.
Mobility sufficient for tuning and voicing. Ability to manage lead weights.
