Hematology/ Oncology Physician ( Specialty Medicine)
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval determines the award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) and is reviewed by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
QualificationsTo qualify for this position you must meet the basic qualifications listed below as well as any additional requirements specified in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed VA physicians who met the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements- United States citizenship; non‑citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited in accordance with VA policy.
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
- Degree obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the study was completed.
- Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
- Residency training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to board certification.
- One of the following residency or training pathways:
- Approved ACGME or AOA residency (including fellowship if applicable).
- One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship or transitional year) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice under full license in the U.S.
- Non‑U.S. residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. under full license, with duties related to the position. U.S. fellowships would be creditable.
- Approved ACGME or AOA residency (including fellowship if applicable).
- Exceptions: Residents in accredited programs who otherwise meet basic requirements are eligible for "Physician Resident Provider" (PRP) status, provided they are fully licensed and appointed on an intermittent basis.
- PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they are granted a scope of practice allowing certain restricted duties under supervision.
- In rare circumstances, the Facility Director may submit a memo to the VISN Director for exceptions to residency requirements based on a physician's overall record.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Preferred certification in Hematology‑Oncology.
- Physical requirements: work is performed primarily in a patient‑care setting that is adequately lighted, temperature controlled, and ventilated. Office temperatures fluctuate periodically. The role involves everyday risks and discomforts that require normal safety precautions, with occasional exposure to noise and dust.
- The Columbus VA Ambulatory Care Center in Columbus, Ohio is seeking a full‑time board‑certified or board‑eligible oncologist.
- Provide comprehensive patient care through consultative outpatient Hematologic and Oncologic services.
- Duty location: Columbus, Ohio.
- Perform Hematology/Oncology care for veteran patients, including outpatient clinic visits, prescribing chemotherapeutic and non‑chemo medications, and performing bone marrow aspirations and biopsies.
- Document clinical encounters in a timely manner in the Electronic Health Record.
- Maintain accurate data on all procedures.
- Attend section meetings, quality committee meetings, and related administrative functions.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, semi‑annual, and annual departmental reports.
- Prepare and update department policies and procedures in compliance with Joint Commission guidelines.
