Equipment Serviceworker
Definition
This is semi-skilled work in a municipal automotive equipment facility.
An employee in this class performs various duties in the servicing and routine maintenance of a variety of automotive and construction equipment.
Normally works under general supervision, with some opportunity for the use of independent judgment.
Characteristic Work
Greases automotive and construction equipment using grease gun, lubricants, and standardized lubricating charts. Checks and changes oil and oil filters on automotive equipment. Checks batteries and adds water as necessary. Checks radiator and adds water to bring to proper level. Recharges batteries as necessary. Drains radiator and replaces water with anti-freeze to winterize equipment. Washes and fuels equipment. Changes and repairs tires and tubes. Steam-cleans equipment and motors. Keeps records of gas and oil used. Replaces burned-out head lamps and various bulbs. Makes service calls in the field, including towing disabled vehicles. Assists skilled mechanics in repairing various types of equipment. Starts vehicles. Checks fluid level in transmissions and rear ends and adds sufficient fluid to bring up to proper level. Changes blades on road graders and other construction equipment. Cleans general garage areas. Performs electronic recordkeeping of parts, labor, and general diagnostic information. Locates and picks up repair parts for mechanics. Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of the eighth school grade and a minimum of one year of paid experience in servicing and maintaining automotive equipment, or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training. THE EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT MEANS THAT YOU MAY SUBSTITUTE UP TO 50% OF PAID EXPERIENCE WITH RELATED EDUCATION OR TRAINING. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license. May require possession of or must obtain within 90 days of employment, a valid State of Ohio commercial driver's license (class and endorsements as required by division).
Some knowledge of the various parts and functioning of automotive and construction equipment. Some knowledge of the proper servicing of various types of automotive and construction equipment.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform heavy physical work for extended periods. Ability to service equipment following standard lubrication charts. Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and construction equipment. List of essential job functions available upon request.
Competitive Examination Process
This is a classified position.
The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%.
NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 70% for qualifying, 20% for education, and 10% for experience.
Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment. (See list of CDL requirements)
RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.
VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to their passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
DRIVER S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
