Lead O&M Technician - Operations
Guernsey Power Station (GPS) is a $1.6 Billion, 1,875 MW (net), 3x1x1 GE 7HA.02 combined cycle electric generating facility under construction in Guernsey County, OH. The Lead Operations & Maintenance Technician (LOMT) provides the assigned GPS team with a knowledgeable, multiskilled expert to lead a shift crew in the operation of an 1,875 MW combined cycle power generation facility. The LOMT is a qualified and experienced Control Room Operator (CRO) with a demonstrated ability to operate the facility in all modes and configurations including emergencies and off-normal activities. The LOMT shall possess solid leadership, technical and administrative skills to ensure the facility is operated in a safe, reliable, efficient, and environmental responsible manner. The LOMT possesses a desire to collaborate with crewmembers daily to ensure work is completed in a timely and efficient manner. Qualified candidates must have a minimum of five (5) years of directly related operations or maintenance experience in an electrical generating facility as a qualified CRO.
Job Responsibilities
- Reports to the Operations Manager, works a regularly scheduled rotating shift, and is subject to scheduled and unscheduled overtime.
- Operates and maintains a combined cycle generating facility and all associated auxiliary and support equipment with minimal guidance or assistance. Proficient at operating the plant via a remote distributed control system (DCS). This position requires making operating decisions based on plant, safety, and environmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures, and using good judgment based on available operating data. Strictly adheres to all safety and environmental rules and regulations to protect employees and public safety.
- Reviews and performs equipment rounds, logs, checklists, and water chemistry analysis to ensure equipment and systems are operating at peak performance. Coordinates with water treatment services provider in optimizing steam cycle chemistry performance. Reads meters, gauges, or automatic devices to record data such as pressures, temperatures, fluid levels, vibration, hours of operation, pressure, and fluid levels, water chemistry to verify operating conditions.
- Will be a team player in the operation of the plant, maintenance activities and in technical support to achieve safe, cost effective operation and maintenance of GPS.
- Will develop and maintain an atmosphere of employee involvement, trust, and motivation through employee mentoring, participation, empowerment, collaboration, and training.
- Foster a team culture which is flexible and adaptable to change, striving for continuous improvement in the accomplishment of work.
- Operate the facility during start-up, shutdown, normal and emergency conditions in accordance with operating procedures and instructions.
- Coordinate and monitor team activities to maintain compliance with all administrative, operational, NERC, HSE and other regulatory requirements and procedures.
- Report team and shift activities, work progress, equipment problems, work requests or unusual conditions in the daily Shift Turnover. Keep the Operations Manager, Maintenance Manager and Facility Manager informed of issues that may impact plant safety, reliability, or environmental compliance.
- Generate and/or review daily reports, logs, checklists, and alarm summaries and ensure all information is accurate and complete, with corrective action taken to resolve identified problems.
- Provide daily operations coordination and planning for assigned shift team to best utilize their skills and abilities.
- Provide and coordinate daily maintenance support as conditions allow to accomplish the established maintenance goals of the facility.
- Assist daily with setting work order priorities, assessing backlog, coordinating daily maintenance activities for assigned shift team and providing maintenance support, as necessary.
- Coordinate and provide training for all team members in the safe and efficient operation of the plant in accordance with training and qualification procedures and programs. Ability to qualify as a CRO and Auxiliary Operator in accordance with established training procedures.
- Review historical operating data and generate reports for forced outage and derate events using DCS historian.
- Serve as Operations Outage Coordinator during maintenance outages by preparing work authorization permits to ensure maximum personnel and equipment protection.
- Fully supports the use of a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) by demonstrating proficiency in using the system and entering data consistent with the facility maintenance philosophy. Records equipment discrepancies in detail on work requests and documents maintenance actions taken in work orders. Handles corrective and preventive maintenance work orders in a timely and high-quality manner. Shows diligence in documenting spare parts usage and re-ordering.
- Maintains equipment by tightening fittings, replacing valve packing, gaskets, valves, gauges, etc. and cleaning, replacing, oiling, and lubricating other component parts and equipment as required.
- Opens and closes valves and breakers as required for proper system operation and mechanical and electrical isolation.
- Performs capital project and/or major program responsibilities as assigned by the Operations Manager.
- Assists other Operations & Maintenance Technicians in repairing and maintaining plant instrumentation and equipment.
- Identify and resolve CEMS problems. Assist in performing calibrations and gas bottle change outs.
- Perform general housekeeping and continuous improvement of the appearance of the facility. Maintain the cleanliness of all areas of the plant and control room, or other duties as assigned.
- Ensure all accidents, incidents, near misses, and potential hazards are immediately reported to Facility Management and relevant paperwork is completed within 24 hours of occurrence.
- Works within the team to develop a culture where everyone embraces, upholds, and accepts responsibility for a safe workplace, a healthy working life, a sustainable environment and the right and duty to intervene.
- To demonstrate commitment to continual improvement of HSE performance, and to be responsible and accountable for the HSE performance of their teams.
Required Skills / Knowledge
- Demonstrates knowledge of all facets of power plant operations.
- Demonstrates the ability to make competent decisions in emergency situations.
- Demonstrates knowledge of gas and steam turbine maintenance.
- Knowledge of GE 7HA.02 heavy frame, advanced technology gas turbines, GE A650 steam turbines and single shaft arrangements is preferred.
- Experience with GE Mark VIe DCS is a plus.
- Above average computer proficiency with Microsoft Office software.
- Above average verbal and written communications skills.
- Ability to operate a fork-lift and similar plant equipment.
