A Civil Service Examination for the position of Maintenance Worker I will be held on April 8, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. in the Community Room.
Participation in the civil service exam is required to be considered for this position. Candidates must score a minimum of 70% on the examination to be eligible for interview consideration. There are no alternative exam dates, and examinations will not be rescheduled for candidates who are unable to attend at the scheduled time.
Applicants must present a valid photo ID at the time of the exam.
Applications will be accepted until 12:00 p.m. on Monday, April 6, 2026.
About the Position
The City of Wilmington, Ohio, is seeking dependable and motivated individuals to establish an Eligibility List for the position of Maintenance Worker I. This posting is intended to create a list of qualified candidates that may be used to fill current or future Maintenance Worker I vacancies across various City departments, including but not limited to Water, Street, Parks, Facilities, and other departments as needs arise.
Under general supervision, the Maintenance Worker I performs routine and semi-skilled maintenance and labor work in support of City operations. Duties may include assisting with the maintenance and repair of City infrastructure, utilities, equipment, facilities, and grounds. Work may involve operating tools and equipment, performing general labor, assisting with repairs or installations, and helping maintain public spaces and City property.
This entry-level position provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and develop practical skills in municipal maintenance while working in compliance with City policies, safety procedures, and applicable regulations. Specific duties, work schedules, and assignments may vary depending on the department where a vacancy occurs.
Candidates who successfully complete the hiring process and are placed on the Eligibility List may be considered for employment as Maintenance Worker I positions become available within the City. Placement on the list does not guarantee employment but allows the City to fill vacancies efficiently as they arise.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with general maintenance, repair, and upkeep of City infrastructure, equipment, facilities, and public spaces.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, and light to medium-duty equipment to complete assigned work.
- Assist with installation, repair, and maintenance activities related to utilities, streets, parks, buildings, and other City property.
- Perform grounds maintenance including mowing, trimming, hauling materials, snow removal, and general site upkeep.
- Assist with preventative maintenance of City vehicles, tools, and equipment.
- Maintain a safe work environment and follow all applicable safety procedures and OSHA standards.
- Attend meetings, training sessions, and seminars as directed.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of departmental operations.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Valid State of Ohio driver’s license with insurability under the City’s vehicle insurance plan.
- Valid State of Ohio Class B CDL license.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in varied and sometimes adverse conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience related to municipal maintenance, construction, infrastructure repair, or grounds maintenance.
- Experience operating maintenance equipment or working with public works infrastructure.
- Additional certifications related to utilities, equipment operation, or maintenance trades.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair practices, or willingness to learn.
- Skill in operating hand and power tools and light to medium-duty equipment.
- Ability to follow written, oral, and pictorial instructions.
- Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and report concerns to supervisors.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with coworkers and the public.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time.
Work Environment
Work may involve exposure to confined spaces, chemicals, loud noise, hazardous materials, inclement weather, and potentially dangerous equipment.
Position requires medium physical work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor, including lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally.
May require work beyond standard hours in emergency or unpredictable situations.
Compensation and Benefits
Starting Hourly Rate: $20.65
Comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, paid leave, and participation in OPERS (Ohio Public Employees Retirement System).
