Service Worker (Job ID: 15-2025-01)
The City of Independence Service Department is seeking individuals to join our team as Service Worker to perform skilled equipment operation, inspection and maintenance on various equipment to be used in materials moving, trash removal, beautification, snowplowing, leaf collection, repair and maintenance of roads, sewers and other similar activities as well as maintain and repair property using a variety of machines, tools and equipment.
Days, Hours & Additional Employment Details:
A Service Department Team Member is a full-time position, working 40 hours a week, Monday – Friday from 8 AM to 4:30 PM.
There will be weeks periodically throughout the year where working evenings, weekends and holidays are required that may result in an adjusted schedule and/or compensatory or overtime.
D uties and Responsibilities:
- Cuts grass and trims weeds on city property and parks, using lawn mower and weed trimmer
- Operates backhoe to dig trenches for water and sewer pipe
- Operates different types of equipment such as a mini excavator skid steer and mini wheel loader, used to perform various functions of the department.
- Drives truck and loads fallen tree limbs and roadside trash onto truck, and delivers refuse to landfill
- Repairs streets and sidewalks with asphalt, cold patching materials, and concrete, using shovel, hand roller, trowel, level, and long-handled tamp
- Removes and replaces damaged traffic and street signs
- Operates snow removal equipment to maintain streets, sidewalks, and driveways
- Operates large wheel loader for loading of salt, bulk stone and compost site maintenance
- Operates and drive combination sewer vacuum and jet to maintain city sewer systems
- Performs maintenance of the roads and streets within the City limits
- Communicates professionally with staff, supervisors and the public
- Attends training classes as directed
- Responds to emergencies, weather and special requests; flexible shifts and overtime required as needed
- Any other functions and/or responsibilities assigned by the Director or his designee

Education:
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent (Required)
- Professional education with Associates or Bachelor's (Preferred)
Experience:
- Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in street maintenance, landscape maintenance, mechanical maintenance, operation of light power equipment, custodial work, or other appropriate field related to position assignment
Additional Requirements:
- Valid State of Ohio Class B Commercial Driver's License with an acceptable driving record
- This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by the AFSCME Local 2339 and Ohio Council 8 and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Independence and AFSCME Local 2339 and Ohio Council 8.

The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to work in the office, remote work will not be an option unless special circumstances or accommodations are made.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to bend, stoop, walk, climb stairs or ladders and push or lift light weight (5-10 pounds). Sometimes frequently work in awkward or confined positions and lift or push moderate weight (15-20 pounds). Occasional lifting or pushing of heavy weight (50+ pounds).
