Job Description:
This is a 100% external-fund-supported position with funds from the Great Lakes Fishery Commission. The person in this position will have two main foci: 1) coordinate and conduct sampling trips on the Great Lakes and connecting waterways to describe the presence of invasive grass carp eggs 2) pose specific questions, perform statistical analysis, and lead scientific products with data on invasive grass carp eggs and other relevant information. (S)he will regularly use software that requires prior knowledge of common data storage and analysis software, e.g. Excel, Access, R. (S)he will coordinate the processing biological and other samples on boats and in the laboratory and may participate in processing samples.
Minimum Qualifications:
- MS required, PhD preferred, in Environmental or Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Fisheries, or closely related field. Must have extensive knowledge of fish ecology, limnology, and Great Lakes science.
- This position requires the scientific education and experience to make day-to-day decisions about the implementation of the study design laid out in the project contract.
- Knowledge of basic fish ecology, limnology, and Great Lakes science
- Experience in collecting and analyzing biological and other samples from boats or other platforms in Great Lakes, connected waterway, large rivers, or other large water bodies. Experience in the operation and data processing from standard fisheries and limnological gear.
- Must be able to provide work direction on sampling trips without the presence of the PI. Will be required to make a series of decisions on each sampling trip based on understanding of the scientific goals of the project and experience with weather and water conditions in the Great Lakes.
- Experience presenting and discussing results and conclusions of data collection and analysis and modeling to scientific and public audiences, i.e., track record of posters and talks at conferences and meetings.
- A track record of writing and submitting manuscripts for journal publication
- Experience working with or for state natural resources agencies
- Expertise with data storage and analysis packages such as Excel, Access, SAS, R, STAN, RTMB
- A valid US driver’s license and ability to drive University of Toledo’s vehicles is required
- Overnight travel may be required for collection and other trips.
- The ability to lift sampling gear weighing up to 80 lbs with assistance from another crew member
- The person in this position must work well as a team member, sometimes under uncomfortable field conditions (e.g. cold, heat, rain)
